My version of The Nose is a response to the combination of the absurdist music of Shostakovich and the Russian Constructivism art, and how the story is interwoven into the dimensionality of space. The design features a giant ramp or a slider that connects the two boxes, two long staircases that intersect each other, and a magnifying glass that plays with the scale of the nose--sitting on a human face or appearing as a human-sized figure, walking. The nose is the focal point of the space, moving freely without being caught. The entire set sits on a constantly rotating turntable, creating a continuous sense of motion throughout the performance. The rhythm and pacing are guided by the brillance of Shostakovich's score.
